I read on one of websites that it is not allowed to breed smooth-haired with long-haired Russian toys. Is it true? Is it something about genetics or what? |

Agnes,
It's a bit of a long story and a complicated situation, but the short answer is that what you read is not true.
There is nothing unhealthy about breeding long and smooth, in fact it is a technique that has been used for decades in Russia to improve the coats of smooth lines. And the cross can never have any bad effect on long-haired lines.
It is believed that the gene expression for long hair is autosomal multifactorial recessive. Meaning: a dog will only have long hair if it has all long haired genes. Otherwise it will have a smooth coat. Possible a nice full smooth coat, but a smooth coat regardless.
I have discussed this subject with some of the most informed breed experts in Russia. There was an administrative decision by the RKF (the AKC counterpart in Russia) to separate the long and smooth lines paperwork. To understand this, at any given dog show in Russia you can expect to see hundreds of Russian Toys. It was a paperwork headache, they did it to simplify their job.
The Russian breeders are very unhappy about this ruling, and expect it to revert in the near future, and fear what will happen if it doesn't. They expect that smooth dogs will degrade with time, some even become patchy-bald. : (
Anyway, the RKF ruling is not accepted (yet, and hopefully never) by the FCI (the international dog federation) or the AKC.

You made it very clear, thanks. I agree it is quite ridiculous to prohibit breeding inside the same breed. |
