My friend's dog has bad breath. Does anyone know what causes that and what to do about it? Her dog is about 1 year old.

As I read somewhere, bad breath can be caused by eating cat poop or worms... Usually dogs like to do it. Ask her if her dog eats something like that.

Ask if the dog has any puppy teeth that did not come out. Some toy dogs do not lose all their baby teeth & food can get stuck between the adult & baby teeth & rot & smell bad.

She checked if he still has baby teeth. She said he probably has. Thank you.

I'm pretty sure Liz is right about this.  We've seen a few times where a trip to the vet for some baby teeth dental extraction has cured halitosis.

Smaller breeds especially (with small jaws)  can have a little difficulty with the baby teeth falling out on their own.  Dental crowding and crooked teeth can also result.

One other thing to consider, depending on your situation, you may be able to brush your dogs teeth, and there are several products available that can supposedly help with breath.

Our dogs LOVE 'Greenies'.  We usually get them the 'teenie' sized ones, but sometimes cut the larger ones.  Greenies are shaped like little toothbrushes and have sort of a gummy consistency.

And another treat for cleaning breath that our dogs like to chew on is 'Virbac C.E.T. HEXtra'.  These Chews are more like a rawhide strip with Chlorhexidine and some ingredients like rosemary extract that does leave their breath smelling kissable.  And they like them.

There are different tablets in pet stores for breath freshening. I tried some of them and must admit, they don't work
